How to Use This Calculator
The Shingle Bundle Calculator is a simple conversion tool that answers the most common question DIYers and contractors ask: "How many bundles do I need?"

Area to Bundles tab: Enter your total roof area in square feet and select the shingle type. The calculator instantly shows the number of squares and bundles, with your waste factor applied. This is the go-to tab when you have measured (or estimated) your roof and need to know how much to buy.

Bundles to Coverage tab: Enter the number of bundles you have and select the shingle type. The calculator shows how many square feet and squares those bundles will cover. Use this tab when you have leftover bundles from a previous job or found a deal on bundles and want to know if you have enough.

Shopping List tab: Enter your roof area, shingle type, ridge length, eave length, and perimeter. The calculator produces a complete shopping list: field shingle bundles, starter strip bundles, ridge cap bundles, drip edge pieces, underlayment rolls, and nail boxes. Print this list and take it to your supply house.

The Formula
The shingle bundle conversion uses these formulas:

Area to Bundles: Squares = Roof Area / 100 Bundles = Squares × Bundles per Square × (1 + Waste%) For 1,700 sq ft architectural at 10% waste: (1,700 / 100) × 3 × 1.10 = 56.1 -> 57 bundles

Bundles to Coverage: Squares = Bundles / Bundles per Square Coverage = Squares × 100 For 60 architectural bundles: 60 / 3 = 20 squares = 2,000 sq ft

Shopping List Accessories: Starter strip bundles = (Eave Length + Rake Length) / 100 ft per bundle Ridge cap bundles = (Ridge + Hip Length) / 20 ft per bundle (GAF/OC) Drip edge pieces = Perimeter / 10 ft per piece Underlayment rolls = Roof Area / 400 sq ft per roll (synthetic) Nail boxes = (Bundles × 4 nails × Shingles per Bundle) / 7,200 per box
Example Calculation
Example: Average Home Shopping List

Lisa is buying materials for her 1,700 sq ft roof in Pennsylvania. She chose GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles. The roof is a simple gable with 40 ft of ridge, 100 ft of eave, and 68 ft of rake (208 ft total perimeter).

Step 1: Calculate field shingle bundles Squares: 1,700 / 100 = 17 squares Bundles: 17 × 3 = 51 bundles With 10% waste: 51 × 1.10 = 56.1 -> 57 bundles GAF Timberline HDZ

Step 2: Build the complete shopping list
• Field shingles: 57 bundles × $105 = $5,985
• Starter strip (GAF ProStart): 168 ft / 100 ft per bundle = 2 bundles × $38 = $76
• Ridge cap (GAF TimberTex): 40 ft / 20 ft per bundle = 2 bundles × $65 = $130
• Drip edge (aluminum): 208 ft / 10 ft per piece = 21 pieces × $6.50 = $137
• Synthetic underlayment: 1,700 / 400 = 4.25 -> 5 rolls × $65 = $325
• Coil nails: 1 box × $55 = $55
• Ice & water shield (eaves): 100 ft × 3 ft wide = 1 roll × $120 = $120

Total materials: ~$6,828

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bundles of shingles per square?
For standard 3-tab and architectural (dimensional) shingles, you need 3 bundles per square. One square = 100 sq ft of roof area. So 3 bundles cover 100 sq ft, and each bundle covers about 33.3 sq ft. Premium designer shingles typically require 4 bundles per square, and cedar shakes require 5 bundles per square. Always check the coverage printed on the bundle wrapper for your specific product.
How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?
A bundle of standard 3-tab shingles weighs 50-65 lbs. A bundle of architectural shingles weighs 60-80 lbs. Premium designer shingles weigh 70-100 lbs per bundle. Cedar shake bundles weigh 40-60 lbs. For a full square: 3-tab weighs 200-240 lbs/square, architectural 240-300 lbs/square, and premium 300-400 lbs/square. This matters for roof load calculations and for how much material you can carry up a ladder per trip.
How many square feet does one bundle of shingles cover?
One bundle of standard 3-tab or architectural shingles covers approximately 33.3 square feet (one-third of a square). One bundle of premium designer shingles covers about 25 square feet (one-quarter of a square). One bundle of cedar shakes covers about 20 square feet (one-fifth of a square). These are coverage areas — you also need to add waste factor (10-15%) for cuts and overlaps, so the usable yield per bundle is slightly less.
How many starter strip bundles do I need?
Starter strip shingles are installed along the eaves (and sometimes rakes) before the first course. A bundle of starter strip covers about 100 linear feet. Divide your total eave length by 100 to get bundles. If you also run starter up the rakes (recommended), add the total rake length. For a typical home with 100 ft of eave and 68 ft of rake: 168 / 100 = 1.68 -> 2 bundles of starter strip. At $25-40/bundle in 2026, starter strip adds $50-80 to your material cost.
How many ridge cap bundles do I need?
Ridge cap shingles cover the peak (ridge) and hip lines of your roof. A bundle of ridge cap shingles covers about 20-33 linear feet depending on the brand. GAF TimberTex covers 20 ft/bundle. OC DecoRidge covers 20 ft/bundle. CertainTeed Shadow Ridge covers 33 ft/bundle. Divide your total ridge and hip length by the coverage per bundle. For a simple gable with a 40-foot ridge using GAF TimberTex: 40 / 20 = 2 bundles. At $55-75/bundle in 2026, ridge cap adds $110-150 per bundle.
