How to Use This Calculator
The Roofing Nail Calculator helps you order the right amount of nails so you never run short on the job.

Quick Estimate tab: Enter your total roof area and select the nail pattern (4-nail standard or 6-nail high wind). The calculator instantly shows the total nail count and the number of boxes or coils to purchase. This is the fastest way to add nails to your material order.

Detailed tab: Choose your roofing material type, nail type (coil vs hand-drive), and whether to include nails for accessories like starter strip, ridge caps, and drip edge. The calculator itemizes the nail count for each component so you can see exactly where the nails go. Use this tab for a precise order when you have all your project details.

Cost Estimate tab: Enter your roof area, nail pattern, nail type, and state. The calculator outputs the total number of boxes and the estimated cost. Nail costs are a small but often-forgotten line item — typically $50-120 for an average home.

The Formula
The roofing nail calculation uses these formulas:

Field Shingle Nails = (Roof Area / 100) × Nails per Square For 1,700 sq ft with 4-nail pattern: (1,700 / 100) × 320 = 5,440 nails

Accessory Nails = Starter Nails + Ridge Nails + Drip Edge Nails Starter strip: ~1 nail per 6 inches of eave = Eave Length × 2 Ridge caps: ~2 nails per linear foot of ridge Drip edge: ~1 nail per 12 inches of perimeter

Total Nails = (Field Nails + Accessory Nails) × (1 + Waste%) (5,440 + 800) × 1.10 = 6,864 nails

Boxes Needed = Total Nails / Nails per Box (7,200 for coil) 6,864 / 7,200 = 0.95 -> 1 box of coil nails
Example Calculation
Example: Average Home in Florida (High-Wind Zone)

Mike is re-roofing his 1,700 sq ft home in Jacksonville, FL. Because Florida requires the 6-nail pattern, his nail count is higher than standard.

Step 1: Calculate field shingle nails Roof area: 1,700 sq ft = 17 squares Nails per square (6-nail pattern): 480 Field nails: 17 × 480 = 8,160 nails

Step 2: Add accessory nails Starter strip (120 ft eave): 120 × 2 = 240 nails Ridge caps (40 ft): 40 × 2 = 80 nails Drip edge (200 ft perimeter): 200 nails Underlayment cap nails: ~150 nails Accessory total: 670 nails

Step 3: Apply waste factor Total with 10% waste: (8,160 + 670) × 1.10 = 9,713 nails

Step 4: Determine boxes Coil nail boxes (7,200/box): 9,713 / 7,200 = 1.35 -> 2 boxes of coil nails
• Cost: 2 boxes × $55 = $110

Frequently Asked Questions

How many roofing nails do I need per square?
With the standard 4-nail pattern, you need approximately 320 nails per square (100 sq ft) for architectural shingles. With the 6-nail high-wind pattern, you need approximately 480 nails per square. These numbers include the nails for the field shingles only. Add about 15-20% more for starter strip, ridge caps, drip edge, and waste.
Should I use coil nails or hand-drive nails?
Coil nails loaded in a pneumatic roofing nailer are the industry standard for any job larger than a small repair. They are dramatically faster (a roofer can nail a shingle in seconds vs. hand-driving), more consistent in depth, and reduce fatigue. A box of coil nails (7,200 nails, ~$45-60 in 2026) covers roughly 20-22 squares at the 4-nail pattern. Hand-drive nails are fine for patching or small sections.
When do I need 6 nails per shingle instead of 4?
Six nails per shingle are required when: (1) the roof is in a high-wind zone with design wind speeds of 110 mph or greater per ASCE 7; (2) the roof slope exceeds 60 degrees (about 21/12 pitch) or is a mansard; (3) the shingle manufacturer warranty requires it for your location. Florida, coastal Texas, and hurricane-prone areas almost always require the 6-nail pattern. Check your local building code or shingle manufacturer installation guide.
What size roofing nails should I use?
For standard asphalt shingle installations over a single layer on plywood or OSB sheathing, use 1-1/4 inch (1.25") 11- or 12-gauge galvanized roofing nails. If you are nailing through two layers of shingles (overlay), use 1-3/4 inch nails. The nail must penetrate at least 3/4 inch into the roof deck or fully through if the deck is less than 3/4 inch thick. Always use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel to prevent rust.
How many boxes of coil nails do I need for a 1,700 sq ft roof?
For a 1,700 sq ft roof with the 4-nail pattern, you need about 5,440 field-shingle nails plus roughly 1,000 more for starter, ridge, and drip edge — about 6,440 total. One box of coil nails contains 7,200 nails. So 1 box covers most 1,700 sq ft roofs. For safety, many roofers buy 2 boxes for a roof this size to avoid a mid-job supply run. With the 6-nail pattern, you need about 9,160 total nails, so 2 boxes.
