How to Use This Calculator
The Roofing Material Calculator generates a complete bill of materials for your entire roofing project in one step.

Complete BOM tab: Enter your roof area, pitch, shingle type, and the linear measurements of ridges, eaves, rakes, and valleys. Also enter the number of pipe penetrations. The calculator produces a detailed material list with quantities and estimated costs for every item you need to order, from shingles down to nails. This is the tab contractors use to prepare supply-house orders.

Material List Only tab: Same inputs as the BOM tab but outputs quantities only, without pricing. Use this tab when you want a clean pick list for calling in an order to your roofing supplier or comparing quotes from multiple distributors.

Budget Estimate tab: Enter your roof area, shingle type, and state for a full project cost estimate that includes all materials, labor, tear-off, and disposal. The estimate is regionalized to your state. Use this tab to set a realistic budget before getting contractor quotes.

The Formula
The material calculator applies these formulas for each line item:

Shingle Bundles = (Roof Area / 100) × Bundles per Square × (1 + Waste%) Underlayment Rolls = Roof Area × (1 + Overlap%) / Roll Coverage Drip Edge Pieces = (Eave Length + Rake Length) / 10 ft × (1 + 10% overlap) Starter Strip Rolls = (Eave Length + Rake Length) / Roll Coverage (typ. 120 ft) Ridge Cap Bundles = Ridge & Hip Length / 20 lin ft per bundle (architectural) Valley Flashing = Valley Length / 10 ft per piece Pipe Boots = Count of penetrations (1 each) Nails (lbs) = Roof Area / 100 × 320 nails / 7,200 per box Ice & Water Shield = Eave Length × 3 ft width / 200 sq ft per roll (cold climates)
Example Calculation
Example: Hip Roof Home in Ohio

Dave has a 2,000 sq ft hip roof in Columbus, OH with a 5/12 pitch. He is replacing with architectural shingles.

Ridge + hip length: 70 ft | Eave perimeter: 140 ft | No rakes (hip roof) | No valleys | 3 pipe vents

Complete Material List:
• Architectural shingles: (20 sq × 3 × 1.12) = 67.2 -> 68 bundles ($2,380)
• Synthetic underlayment: 2,000 × 1.10 / 900 = 2.4 -> 3 rolls ($390)
• Drip edge (eaves): 140 / 10 × 1.10 = 15.4 -> 16 pieces ($96)
• Starter strip: 140 / 120 = 1.2 -> 2 rolls ($70)
• Ridge cap (hip & ridge): 70 / 20 = 3.5 -> 4 bundles ($200)
• Ice & water shield (eaves, OH code): 140 × 6 ft / 200 = 4.2 -> 5 rolls ($550)
• Pipe boot flashings: 3 units ($45)
• Roofing nails: 20 sq × 320 = 6,400 -> 1 box ($55)

Materials total: ~$3,786 Labor (OH): 20 sq × $375 = $7,500 Tear-off + disposal: ~$1,600 Total project estimate: ~$12,886

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials do I need for a complete roof replacement?
A complete shingle roof replacement requires: shingles (field and ridge cap), underlayment, drip edge for eaves and rakes, starter strip, ice & water shield (at eaves in cold climates and valleys), pipe boot flashings, step flashing at walls, roofing nails, and ridge vent or other ventilation. Optional items include hip and ridge cap shingles, valley metal flashing, and skylight flashing kits.
How many roofing nails do I need per square?
You need approximately 320 nails per roofing square (100 sq ft) when using 4 nails per shingle, or 480 nails per square in high-wind zones requiring 6 nails per shingle. A standard box of 1-1/4" coil nails contains 7,200 nails, enough for about 22 squares at standard nailing or 15 squares in high-wind zones.
How much drip edge do I need?
You need drip edge along all eaves and rakes. Measure the total linear footage of eaves plus rakes. Drip edge comes in 10-foot pieces. Divide your total footage by 10 and add 10% for overlap at joints. For a typical 1,700 sq ft gable roof, you need about 18-20 pieces of drip edge.
What is the most expensive part of a roof replacement?
Labor is typically the single largest cost, accounting for 40-60% of the total project. Shingles are the largest material cost at 30-40% of total. The remaining 10-20% covers underlayment, flashing, drip edge, starter strip, ridge cap, nails, ventilation, and disposal. Choosing premium shingles can shift the balance toward materials.
How much does a full set of roofing materials cost in 2026?
For a typical 1,700 sq ft roof in 2026, materials cost approximately: $2,000-2,500 for architectural shingles, $300-500 for underlayment, $150-200 for drip edge, $80-120 for starter strip, $60-100 for ridge cap, $50-80 for flashing, and $50-80 for nails. Total materials run $2,700-3,600 depending on quality and region.
