How to Use This Calculator
The Soffit Calculator helps you determine exactly how many soffit panels, trim pieces, and accessories you need, along with a complete installed cost estimate.

Quick Estimate tab: Enter your total eave length (the combined linear feet of all horizontal roof edges with overhangs) and your overhang depth (the distance from the fascia to the wall, typically 12-24 inches). Select a waste factor based on your roof complexity — 10% is standard, use 15% for hip roofs with mitered corners. The calculator instantly shows your total soffit square footage and an estimated panel count.

Detailed Material tab: This tab builds a full shopping list. Choose your soffit material (vinyl, aluminum, wood, or fiber cement), panel width, and whether you want vented or solid panels. The calculator outputs exact panel count, J-channel pieces, and coverage details. Panel width matters — if your overhang is 16 inches, a 12-inch panel needs to be combined with a filler strip, while a 16-inch panel covers it in one piece. The vent type selection affects your attic ventilation capacity, shown as Net Free Area.

Full Cost tab: Add your state for regional pricing, and optionally include J-channel and fascia board replacement. The calculator provides an itemized cost breakdown covering soffit panels, J-channel or F-channel trim, fascia work if selected, and labor. Labor rates range from $3 to $8 per linear foot depending on your region and material — fiber cement is the most labor-intensive due to its weight and the need for specialized cutting.

The Formula
The soffit calculator uses these formulas:

Soffit Area = Total Eave Length (ft) x Overhang Depth (ft) Overhang Depth in feet = Overhang Depth (inches) / 12

Panel Count = (Soffit Area x (1 + Waste Factor)) / Panel Coverage Area Standard vinyl panel coverage = (Panel Width / 12) x 12 = Panel Width sq ft per 12-ft panel Example: 12" x 12' panel = 1 ft x 12 ft = 12 sq ft coverage

J-Channel = Total Eave Length x 2 (both sides) / 12 ft per piece → round up F-Channel = Total Eave Length x 1 (fascia side only) / 12 ft per piece → round up

Material Cost (2026): - Vinyl soffit panels: $2.00-$4.00/sq ft - Aluminum soffit panels: $4.00-$7.00/sq ft - Wood soffit (cedar/pine): $3.00-$6.00/sq ft - Fiber cement soffit: $5.00-$9.00/sq ft - J-channel: ~$0.50/LF (~$6.00 per 12' piece) - Aluminum fascia wrap: $3.00-$5.00/LF - Fascia board replacement: $5.00-$10.00/LF

Labor = Total Eave Length x $3.00-$8.00/LF (varies by material and region)
Example Calculation
Example: 1,800 sq ft Colonial in Ohio — Vinyl Soffit with Fascia Wrap

Tom is replacing deteriorated plywood soffit on his two-story colonial with new vinyl vented soffit and aluminum fascia wrap.

Step 1: Quick Estimate
• Total eave length: 180 LF (two 50-ft sides + two 40-ft gable returns)
• Overhang depth: 18 inches (1.5 ft)
• Soffit area: 180 x 1.5 = 270 sq ft
• With 10% waste: 270 x 1.10 = 297 sq ft

Step 2: Detailed Materials
• Vinyl panels (12" wide x 12' long = 12 sq ft each): 297 / 12 = 25 panels
• J-channel (wall side): 180 LF / 12 = 15 pieces
• J-channel (fascia side): 180 LF / 12 = 15 pieces
• Total J-channel: 30 pieces
• Vent type: Fully vented — provides 180 x 9 = 1,620 sq in NFA (adequate for 1,800 sq ft attic)

Step 3: Full Cost Breakdown
• Vinyl soffit panels (25 x $28 avg each): $700
• J-channel (30 pieces x $6 each): $180
• Aluminum fascia wrap (180 LF x $4.00): $720
• Soffit labor (180 LF x $4.00): $720
• Fascia wrap labor (180 LF x $2.50): $450
• Old soffit removal: $300
Total installed: ~$3,070 ($17.06/LF)

Tom saves about $800 by combining the fascia wrap with the soffit job since the scaffolding setup is shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install soffit in 2026?
Soffit installation costs in 2026 range from $6 to $20 per linear foot of eave, depending on material and overhang width. Vinyl soffit is the most affordable at $2-$4 per square foot for materials plus $3-$5 per linear foot for labor. Aluminum runs $4-$7 per square foot with similar labor. Fiber cement is the most expensive at $5-$9 per square foot plus $5-$8 per linear foot labor due to its weight and cutting difficulty. For a typical home with 160 linear feet of eave and 16-inch overhangs, expect to pay $1,400-$2,200 for vinyl or $2,800-$4,800 for fiber cement including all trim and labor.
What is the difference between vented and solid soffit panels?
Vented soffit panels have perforations that allow outside air to flow into the attic, providing the intake half of a balanced attic ventilation system. Fully vented panels have perforations across the entire surface and provide approximately 9 square inches of Net Free Area (NFA) per linear foot. Center-vented panels have a perforated strip down the middle third, providing about 5-6 square inches NFA per linear foot. Solid panels have no perforations and are used where ventilation is already handled by other means or on porch ceilings. Building codes require 1 square foot of NFA per 150-300 square feet of attic floor, so most homes need at least some vented soffit.
How many soffit panels do I need?
To calculate soffit panel quantity, first find your total soffit area: Total Eave Length (feet) multiplied by Overhang Depth (in feet). Then divide by each panel coverage area. A standard 12-inch by 12-foot vinyl soffit panel covers 12 square feet. So for 160 linear feet of eave with a 16-inch (1.33 ft) overhang, your soffit area is 213 sq ft. At 12 sq ft per panel, you need 18 panels. Add 10% waste for a total of 20 panels. You will also need J-channel on both sides of every run, so 2 x 160 = 320 linear feet of J-channel, or 27 pieces at 12 feet each.
Do I need J-channel for soffit installation?
Yes, J-channel or an equivalent receiving channel is required to hold soffit panels in place. Standard installation uses J-channel along both the wall side and the fascia side of the soffit. Some installers use F-channel at the fascia, which provides a slightly cleaner look and allows the soffit to be removed without removing the channel. J-channel costs approximately $0.50 per linear foot ($6 for a 12-foot piece) and is available in colors to match your soffit. You need channel on both sides of every eave run, so double your total eave length to get J-channel linear footage.
Should I replace fascia when installing new soffit?
Inspect your fascia boards before installing new soffit. If the wood is rotted, warped, or pulling away from the rafters, replace it first — new soffit installed against bad fascia will sag and gap within a year. If the wood is structurally sound but cosmetically worn, aluminum fascia wrap is a cost-effective solution at $3-$5 per linear foot that covers the wood with a maintenance-free aluminum cladding. Full fascia board replacement with primed 1x6 or 1x8 lumber runs $5-$10 per linear foot installed. Since the soffit installer already has ladders and scaffolding set up, combining fascia and soffit work saves 20-30% on labor versus doing them separately.
